You're Invited! Join Us for a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for New Communication Boards on our Elementary Playgrounds!
On Tuesday, October 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Elementary, Oak Harbor Public Schools will celebrate inclusion and belonging on school playgrounds with the installation of new communication boards. The communication boards will be placed at each elementary school and Hand-in-Hand Early Learning Center.
Installation of the communication boards is possible through community support, the Oak Harbor Educational Foundation (OHEF), Island Thrift, and the Whidbey Community Foundation. It is the next step in accessibility for many students who use augmentative & alternative communication (AAC) systems in the classroom but are unable to bring their electronic devices to the playground.
Family and staff shared perspectives about the power of communication systems during a fundraiser to benefit the project that was hosted by OHEF last fall. One parent shared the impact the AAC systems had on his third grade son.
“We can better understand what activities he finds interest in so we can do what he wants instead of guessing what he wants,” said Timothy Georgalas.
The outdoor boards placed at playgrounds will allow students to communicate with each other and with staff in the same way they do with assistive devices in the classroom.
“It is important for all of our students to have a sense of belonging and inclusion in our schools and on our playgrounds. By designing inclusive spaces and providing these communication boards for our students, it empowers every child to experience the joy of play and build relationships,” said Dr. Michelle Kuss-Cybula, Superintendent.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include remarks from Superintendent Dr. Kuss-Cybula, a demonstration of the use of the boards with our students and staff, and fall refreshments. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there!
