Student Spotlight: OHHS Student Accepted into Do-It Scholars Program through the University of Washington

Oak Harbor High School Sophomore Ramona Southwick recently received acceptance into a the Do-It Scholars Program through the University of Washington, a comprehensive program that empowers students with disabilities to succeed in challenging fields of study and employment.  Southwick is one of only 20 students across the state to receive acceptance into the program this year.

"My teacher told me about the program and thought that I would be a good candidate," said Southwick, who is a student that receives special services for Autism.

The Do-It Scholars focuses on providing students with access to technology, peer support, mentor support, college preparation and work-based learning opportunities. Ramona will be focuses on studying website accessibility and cybersecurity in the program, an area of study she says she was inspired by attending the school's recent Women in STEM Career Panel by IGNITE Worldwide. 

The three-year program provides students with the opportunity to live in the dorms at the University of Washington over the summer so they can prepare for a future in a college setting, while learning and mentoring fellow students. They are also provided with necessary technology for their success. Ramona received a laptop, printer and text to speech software to assist her in the program and in college. 

"I'm most excited about staying in the dorms and meeting other students," said Southwick.
