Between January 12 and January 25, Oak Harbor High School hosted the SkillsUSA North Puget Sound Regional Photography and TV Production competitions. Students from across the North Puget Sound Region tested their skills against each other, vying for the chance to go to the State Competition in their respective competitions. While the high school played host, the majority of the competitions were in fact virtual, leaving it up to the students to measure their own progress and deadlines. Regardless of snow days and delays, our students rose to the challenge exhibiting their graphic arts prowess.
For the Photography competition, Kamiak High School and Oak Harbor High School went head to head. However, when all was shot and saved, Oak Harbor claimed the top three spots. Bailey Darnell Class of ‘24 placed first, Matthew Ackerman Class of ‘24 placed second by a narrow margin of 2.5 points, and Zoey Spanos Class of ‘25 placed third. Of the competition, Bailey Darnell stated, “The SkillsUSA competition was challenging (and) I feel a lot of skills were demanded of us, but it was fun to find creative and technical ways of meeting those challenges.”
In the realm of Cinematography, Jacob Calim Class of ‘24 and Madisyn Spanos Class of ’25 rose to the top, claiming first place for the North Puget Sound Region. Jacob and Madisyn said while speaking of their experience, “It was very stressful at first, but working together as a team helped us power through our shortcomings and have fun.”
Thanks to all of our hosts and competitors for putting in the time and effort to make this an organized and successful series of competitions!
